PERFORMANCES BEGIN 7 SEPTEMBER
A giant, smoke-breathing, mechanical 'Time Dragon' spreads its huge wings 25 feet above the stage of London's Apollo Victoria Theatre as, underneath, preparations are nearly complete for the arrival of the spectacular new musical WICKED.
A team of over 50 mechanics, carpenters, electricians and technicians have been working over 80 hours a week to complete the huge set that creates the fantasy world of Oz and won a Tony Award for its creator, Eugene Lee.
The gigantic structure is comprised of steel, aluminium, fibreglass, plastic and fabric and features computer-driven cogs, wheels and gears that all merge to create a sense of perpetual, clockwork motion. Finally, this elaborate mechanical construction will be brought to life through a combination of lighting, projections and special effects.
WICKED, Broadway's top-selling musical of the last two years, tells the untold story of the legendary witches from L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical will open at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre on Wednesday 27 September with previews from Thursday 7 September.
Winner of fifteen major awards, including the Grammy and three Tonys.
WICKED has played to over two million people since opening at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway in October 2003. The musical is also playing to sell-out audiences in Chicago and on a record-breaking North American tour.
WICKED is presented in London by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. UK General Management: Nick Salmon / Act Productions, Executive Producer: Michael McCabe.
